We study how marine phytoplankton, the microscopic photosynthetic organisms that support ocean life and help regulate the climate, respond as the ocean changes.

We use automated instruments like SeaFlow, our shipboard flow cytometer, to track phytoplankton communities across thousands of miles of open ocean.

We combine high-resolution observations with statistical and machine-learning methods to test what controls phytoplankton growth and survival.
